Lauder Basin Conservation Area

Tracks Overview

There are two access points from Cambrians (near St Bathans) or Cluden Creek (Lindis).

For either entrances you must obtain permission through the online DOC form here.  It is an easy form to fill out and then they email if approved with access codes. I recommend you do the form a few days before you go to give them time to respond. Check out the links in red below for map, trails and distances. Remember, with all mountain trails, to take a map, communication (phone reception isn't great) and be prepared for all kinds of weather.

Cambrians

Starting from the Carpark at the end of Lauder Station Road, you follow the well marked trail (orange markers) through the station along a laneway to the base of the hill. There is a gate and a small creek. You will then start the climb approx. 600m to the conservation boundary 7km in (1080m). You enter the conservation area and continue on up the track another 7.5km to the highest point of 1660m!

Lauder Basin Hut is another 6km further and off a side track. You then link up with the other trails.

Directions and Float Parking

Enter "Lauder Station Road, Cambrians" into Google Maps and drive to the end. There you will see the carpark on the right with the locked gate and DOC signs. Watch out for the drain beside the road. Its a decent size but is not completely flat. Both ends of the carpark have culverts.

Camping is permitted on Conservation land only.

No fires allowed. There is a campsite in St Bathans Domain (about 11 km away) with a purpose built horse paddock in the back paddock beside the trees. (The domain includes the paddock through the gate at the back which is sometimes closed)
