Whakaari Conservation Area
Mt Judah Track
Track Overview
See Map Key for track distances below.

One of the most beautiful places in the world! Splashes of history are all along this trail showing the remains of many huts and a large Scheelite mine. Climbing up the gorge you are provided with beautiful views, native beach forest and waterfalls! Not to mention the beautiful sound of running water and screaming feral goats.
From the carpark to the river crossing just before the Jean Hut (Historic) is a nice wide good farm track and although being a constant climb, its pretty easy going but some hill fitness is needed. Once you reach the rocky stream before the hut take care crossing, please assess as rivers change. I found higher up was easiest crossing and lower very difficult.
Jean Hut to Heather Jock Hut is a steep zigzag grassy track, watch for soft spots as there is a lot of moisture in areas and there are many swampy bits. We had no trouble with this section except a wet foot.

Heather Jock hut has 3 bunk beds (no bookings) and toilet but is very exposed and the winds could be intense.

McIntyre Hut is a 5 bunk tidy and roomy hut with 'social' area and toilet. (No bookings) Doc says 6 bunks but there is 5. Tickets are required for huts. Take a portable fence and look around, there are spots around/below hut for a few horses.

The last section (white) that cuts down to the Bonnie Jean Hut (Historic) is the most challenging section but is similar to the Heather Jock section. Grassy, steep in places and swampy but totally doable. Requiring a bit of common sense.
Please take note on the track map, the right hand track to Heather Jock hut has a skinny bike grid only with no gate. Further up the track there are several flights of stairs.

McIntyre Hut track is, for the most part, farm track. The tricky section is inside the forest both sides of the Buckler Burn river. Tracks are steep and a couple of areas of rocky ground. There are some fallen trees in this section but aren't hard to get around and a couple of small ones to step over. There are two river crossings, one smaller one which is rocky with a small bank to climb up/down not very challenging but a little awkward. Crossing the Buckler Burn river looks scary, its loud, rocky and swift but not very deep and the horses didn't struggle. There are warning signs as the river can change dramatically after rain and snowmelt. We went late spring with a dusting of snow and rain in the past week. I'd say summer it would be far less intimidating! Please plan your crossing and then plan again. If you would like some insight feel free to contact me. Your horses will need to be hill fit for these trails. Red is the easiest.

Please not that the turn off to the McIntyre Hut is the second track off the main trail where a history plaque is. First track is private farm track.

All tracks are well marked and sign posted. You will encounter hikers, bikers and goats.
Take the insect repellant!

GLENORCHY IS ONE OF THE MOST STUNNING PLACES IN THE WORLD BUT CAN BE DANGEROUS IN HEAVY RAIN, STRONG WINDS AND SNOW.
Please plan your trip around weather.

Directions and Float Parking
NOTE: The road from Queenstown to Glenorchy is well sealed but is windy and hilly, care is required when hauling a load/float. One of the bluffs is quite narrow and needs careful navigation with other traffic.
This road is prone to slips and flooding.

Enter "Mount Judah Recreational Trails" into Google Maps
Takes a bit over an hour from Frankton depending on traffic.
There is a large carpark with a toilet but it will pay to check how many cars are in there before entering so you can turn around. Two or three floats would be fair parked to the side.
Carpark entrance
Is straight after Wyuna Station
